Arnold River — Lake Brunner / Greymouth
Flowing out of Lake Brunner (Kōtuku Whakaoho) toward the Grey River / Māwheranui, the Arnold is a gem of the West Coast — short, beautiful, and full of energy. The river is surrounded by lush native rainforest and framed by the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps.
Known to Māori as Kōtuku Whakaoho, “awakening of the white heron,” this area is rich in birdlife and natural history. The Arnold’s clear, pool-drop flow creates a perfect introduction to whitewater rafting, with a mix of calm sections and lively Grade 2 – 3 rapids surrounded by native beech and podocarp forest.
Located just 20 minutes from Greymouth, the Arnold River is ideal for half-day or family adventures — offering a taste of the West Coast’s wilderness without needing to go far off the beaten track.
