West Coast rafting day tour
Grey Wilderness Raft 1 Day Tour
Raft through the heart of the West Coast on the Upper Grey River / Māwheranui. This full-day Grade 3 adventure combines fun whitewater, native beech forest, steep gorges, mountain views and a wild backcountry feel.
A classic West Coast river day
The Grey Wilderness Raft is Inland Adventures’ most popular day tour — and it is easy to see why. This trip takes you into a beautiful section of the Upper Grey River / Māwheranui, where the river winds through native forest, rocky rapids and steep-sided gorges that are difficult, and in places impossible, to reach except by raft.
The day begins with a pick-up in Reefton or Ikamatua, followed by a scenic drive through West Coast country to the river. Once we arrive, your guides will fit you with rafting gear, run through a full safety briefing and teach you the paddle commands you need before we set off.
The first few minutes on the water are calm, giving you time to settle into the raft and get used to paddling. Then the valley begins to tighten, the forest comes closer, and the river starts to show its character. Moss, beech, fern, mountain backdrops and clear river water make this a very West Coast kind of adventure.
Beech forest, rocky rapids and steep green gorges make the Upper Grey / Māwheranui one of the West Coast’s great one-day rafting journeys.

What to expect on the river
As the day unfolds, we pass the waterfall known as Lady of the Grey, then move into the rock garden section where the biggest waves and boulders of the Upper Grey / Māwheranui begin to appear.
Rapids such as Double Rock and Annie’s Waves keep the rafting lively, with enough splash and movement to make the day exciting without needing previous rafting experience.
After a riverside picnic lunch, we continue downstream into the spectacular Gentle Annie Gorge. This steep-walled canyon is one of the highlights of the trip. On warm days, those who want to can slide out of the raft and float through the gorge in deep pools, while anyone who prefers to stay dry can simply enjoy the view from the raft.
By mid-afternoon we reach the take-out, change into dry clothes and return to Ikamatua or Reefton, with time left for onward travel.
Is this trip right for me?
This trip is a great choice if you want a full West Coast rafting day with more action than a gentle family float, but without committing to an overnight adventure.
Choose this trip if you want Grade 3 whitewater, native forest, gorges and a river day that feels remote but still fits into one day.
Consider the Arnold Family Raft if you want something gentler for younger children or cautious first-timers. Consider the Grey 2 Day or Grey 3 Day Adventure if you want more time on the river, riverside camping and a deeper wilderness journey.
